A Gen X Opinion of Top Gun: Maverick

When I was 14 years old and in the 9th grade I watched a movie that had a huge impact on me. The first Top Gun movie was released in 1986 and it had every teenager ready to sign up for military service (especially the Navy) and hopefully become a pilot. While those dreams faded for most of us there were a few who went all the way as the Navy seen a huge boost in recruitment at the time.

Top Gun Maverick

Flash forward 36 years and this 50 year old Gen X went to the theater (which I rarely do) to watch Top Gun: Maverick. Again this movie hit me in a powerful way but differently. I had no urge to be something I’m not but rather I witnessed a great portrayal of the human struggles of skill, pride, love, hate, death, sin, age, guilt, forgiveness, fear, and all things human nature.

While all that may seem like I’m thinking too deep about my enjoyment of this movie, let me be clear, without the intense action I probably wouldn’t cared about any of those things.

What Is My Opinion Of Top Gun: Maverick?

It is a must see movie for anyone teenage and up! I left the theater with the opinion that it was the best movie I had seen in at least 10 years. I’m writing this post 3 weeks after seeing it and I’m still excited about this movie and can’t wait until I can purchase it so I can watch it a few more times.

A Critique From A Christian Worldview

I was asked about seeing this movie as a Christian and viewing it through that worldview so I should address that. It’s easy to watch any movie that puts forth a person as a fornicator, filled with sinful pride, and an overall lack of Godliness as the hero and say we shouldn’t watch it. But, how do you make a movie realistic in any way without expressing human nature in the film. If we pretend that this doesn’t exist in the making of a film then the movie loses part of its story. We see it in the movie the same way we see it all around us, we witness it, view it through a Christian worldview, recognize the struggles within ourselves and strive to follow God.

Conclusion

The acting in this movie is top notch, the directing and producing is second to none, the music score is excellent, and the use of cameras from the ground and in the jets is simply amazing. Go See This Movie! You won’t be disappointed.
